All about back 2 school

Back to school gear covers the 4 things a kid carries every weekday: a backpack, a water bottle, a lunch bag, and a pencil case. This collection has all 4, sized for actual kids rather than shrunken adult versions. Real school use is rough. Backpacks get dropped, dragged, and overstuffed with binders; water bottles roll off bleachers; lunch boxes ride upside down. Everything here is picked to survive a full school year of that treatment, not just the photogenic first week.

Size is the whole game here. Toddlers 1 to 3 need a mini backpack that holds a change of clothes and nothing heavier, kids 4 to 8 do best with padded straps and a chest clip, and tweens 9 to 12 want laptop sleeves and enough room for binders. Every water bottle we stock is BPA free, and leakproof lids matter more than capacity. Before buying, measure your child's torso; a pack should sit above the hips, not swing below them.

Back 2 School questions, answered

What size backpack does an elementary school kid need?

For most kids 4 to 8, a 15 to 16 inch backpack fits both the child and a standard folder. The pack should end at the waist, not bounce against the backside. When in doubt, size down; kids fill whatever space you give them.

How do I know if a kids' water bottle is BPA free?

Check for a BPA free callout on the packaging or the product listing; reputable brands state it plainly. Stainless steel bottles sidestep the question entirely since they contain no polycarbonate plastic. If a clear plastic bottle does not say BPA free anywhere, assume it is not and pass.

How often should I wash a lunch box?

Wipe the inside daily and give it a full soap-and-water wash weekly, or right away after a leak. Fabric lunch bags usually handle a gentle machine cycle if you let them air dry. Leave it unzipped overnight so it dries fully; a sealed damp lunch box grows mildew fast.

When should I replace my kid's backpack?

Replace it when the straps fray, the zippers fail, or the bottom seams start to split, whichever comes first. A well-made kids' backpack should last at least a full school year. Watch the straps most closely, since they tend to fail suddenly and usually mid-commute.
