All about glow

Glow toys use LEDs, projection, or glow-in-the-dark materials to turn lights-out into the best part of the day. Here that means light-up toys, galaxy projectors that wash a bedroom ceiling in stars, light-up flying toys for dusk in the backyard, and glow-in-the-dark gear kids charge under a lamp before bed. Kids use them to make bedtime feel less like an ending: a projector runs while they fall asleep, and glow gear turns the hallway into a night mission.

Two safety checks matter with anything that lights up. First, the battery door must close with a screw, since loose button batteries are one of the most dangerous things a toddler can swallow; every light-up toy here has a secured compartment. Second, match the toy to the kid: galaxy projectors work from toddler bedrooms on up, light-up flying toys need the coordination of kids 4 to 8 or older, and tweens 9 to 12 go for glow gear they can wear. Rechargeable beats disposable for anything used nightly.

Glow questions, answered

Are galaxy projectors safe to leave on all night?

Most are designed for it, but use the built-in timer if the projector has one. LEDs run cool, so heat is rarely the issue; the bigger concern is that a bright, moving projection can keep some kids awake. Start with the dimmest setting and a 45 minute timer.

Are button batteries in light-up toys dangerous?

A swallowed button battery is a medical emergency, since it can start burning through a child's esophagus in as little as 2 hours. That is why the US toy standard ASTM F963 requires battery compartments in kids' toys to need a tool to open. Check the screw periodically and head straight to the ER if you ever suspect a swallow.

How does glow-in-the-dark stuff work without batteries?

Glow-in-the-dark materials contain phosphors that absorb light and release it slowly as a soft glow. Charge them under a bright lamp or in daylight for 10 to 15 minutes and they will keep glowing after lights out. The glow fades gradually, which many kids actually prefer at bedtime.

Are light-up flying toys OK for younger kids?

Most work best for ages 6 and up, since launching and catching takes real coordination. Kids 4 to 5 can join in with an adult handling the launches. Fly them outdoors or under high ceilings, away from faces and ceiling fans.
